Stamp duty and registration in Karnataka
For a residential agreement of up to one year, Karnataka charges 0.5% of the average annual rent plus the security deposit, with a cap of ₹500. With Bengaluru rents the cap almost always applies, which is why the ₹500 e-stamp is standard. For 1 to 10 years the rate is about 1% and registration becomes compulsory.
Buy an SHCIL e-stamp certificate from an authorised collection centre or bank. Physical stamp paper is no longer used for rent agreements in Karnataka. This rate comes from published guides to the Karnataka Stamp Act; confirm the amount at the counter.
Bengaluru's custom of a 10-month deposit is practice, not law. Our form defaults to 2 months; choose "Other" to enter any amount you have agreed.
Rates are from public sources as of October 2026 and can change. Confirm the amount with the stamp vendor or sub-registrar office before paying. This page is general information, not legal advice.
